Guidelines for Your Stay
Welcome to Earth Haven Farm! We are excited to offer you a hands-on experience throughout the growing season, from start to finish. We believe that experience is the best teacher, and the skills you gain here will stay with you for a lifetime.
Health and Safety:
To ensure the health and well-being of our team, animals, and visitors, we kindly request that you refrain from smoking on the premises. All buildings are designated as non-smoking areas.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Your responsibilities will include preparing the greenhouse, starting seeds, preparing field beds, planting seeds and seedlings, weeding, watering, and harvesting produce for market. We are looking for hardworking, honest, and dedicated individuals to join our team.
For those interested in more physically demanding tasks, there will be opportunities to help with fencing, clearing brush and rolling out hay for mulch. From June through September, you will also assist with stacking small square bales of hay during haying season. As winter approaches, your help will be needed in stacking wood and transitioning greenhouses for colder weather.
If you are eager to learn about our biodynamic agricultural practices, including the use and application of preps and homeopathic treatments for plants, you will have the opportunity to engage with these methods throughout a seasonal stay.
To fully benefit from your experience, we encourage a season-long stay, which will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of our operations and valuable learning opportunities.
Accommodations:
You will be provided with a bed and clean sheets. Please note that you will be responsible for your own laundry.
Food and Meals:
Basic food will be provided. We ask that you inform us of any special dietary requirements. You will be expected to prepare your own breakfast, while lunch and dinner will typically be a collaborative effort, with everyone contributing to meal preparation and cleanup. People from other countries are encouraged to cook and share their traditional meals with us.
Appliances and Conservation:
As we live off-grid, please be aware that there is no air conditioning, dishwasher, or microwave. We encourage the use of our outhouse and the reduced use of water for showering especially during drought weather conditions.
Communications:
Wi-Fi is available but limited to the farmhouse. Cell phone service may be limited due to our remote location and varying weather conditions.
Transportation:
Earth Haven Farm is located north of Belleville in Eastern Ontario, and public transit is not available. Having your own transportation would be beneficial.
Eligibility Requirements:
You must be legally eligible to live and work in Canada and possess a valid Health Card. Good working references are required, preferably from previous farm work. An in-person interview at our farm or via electronic media.
What to Bring:
Please bring a hat, work gloves, safety boots, rubber boots, a rain suit, a bathing suit, and a variety of clothing suitable for all weather conditions. Bring your own toiletries, sunscreen, bug and bug spray. We do have lots of bug hats.
What Not to Bring:
We kindly ask that you do not bring hair dryers or other electrical appliances.
Cautions:
If you have allergies or adversities to certain foods, animals, bees, insects, black flies, mosquitoes, poison ivy, or other plants, please consider these factors seriously before applying.
All individuals wishing to join Earth Haven Farm for the season will be required to sign an agreement form, which will be presented to you for review and signature.
